Thomas Jefferson (April 13 [O.S. April 2] 1743 – July 4, 1826) was an American Founding Father who was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and later served as the third president of the United States from 1801 to 1809. Previously, he had served as the second vice president of the United States from 1797 to 1801.
A proponent of democracy, republicanism, and individual rights motivating American colonists to break from Great Britain and form a new nation, he produced formative documents and decisions at both the state and national level.
Born into a wealthy planter family in Virginia’s Tidewater region, Jefferson became a lawyer in 1767. He represented Virginia in the Continental Congress from 1775 to 1783, which included writing the Declaration of Independence in 1776, serving as a wartime governor and diplomat, and helping to found the University of Virginia in 1819.
Jefferson defeated John Adams in the 1800 presidential election. In response to bitter partisan differences that developed during his first term as president between Federalists and Republicans, Jefferson favored a peaceful resolution by sending James Madison to represent him in direct negotiations with Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. The resulting Peace of Amiens temporarily ended fighting between France and Britain; it lasted about a year.
On his second term as president, Jefferson continued his support for limited government; he cut military spending, reduced the national debt, and approved the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, doubling the size of the United States. As tensions mounted between himself and Secretary of War James Madison over foreign policy—particularly the trade embargo against Britain—Jefferson began secretly preparing for war with Britain by ordering military buildups and approving plans to invade British North America. In 1807, he imposed an embargo that hurt American relations with both Britain and France. He expected that cutting off trade would force both nations to make peace with America on more favorable terms; however, it also severely damaged America’s own economy and created widespread protest among New Englanders. The embargo was lifted after Thomas Jefferson left office in 1809.
In retirement, Jefferson founded the University of Virginia after previously creating Monticello, his plantation estate near Charlottesville, Virginia. Jefferson is considered one of the most influential Founding Fathers because of his central role in drafting the Declaration of Independence and his advocacy of republicanism and individual rights. Many modern scholars rate Jefferson as one of the greatest presidents in American history.
