Description
Most species in the genus Melissa are herbaceous perennials growing to 50–150 cm (20–60 in) tall. The leaves are ovate to lanceolate, often wrinkled or puckered, with an entire margin. The flowers are borne in whorls in the leaf axils, each flower 2–4 mm (0.08–0.16 in) diameter, with four lobes; they are white, yellowish, or pale pink. The fruit is a four-lobed schizocarp.
Ecology
Many species of Melissa are known to be bee-pollinated; indeed, bee keepers have found that planting Melissa near their hives results in increased honey production. Some species are also self-compatible and can thus reproduce without pollinators. However, many species exhibit what is known as generalized mutualism: they accept pollen from a wide range of different plant taxa (including other Melissa species), but show a preference for pollen from their own species. This has led to the evolution of specialized pollination systems involving several different bee species which visit Melissa plants specifically to collect pollen. For example, M. lusitanica is pollinated by three different kinds of solitary bees – Andrena nigroaenea, A. vaga and Osmia avosetta – which collect pollen exclusively from this one plant species (although they may visit other plants for nectar).
Uses
Several species in the genus Melissa (lemon balm, melissa officinalis, melissa officinalis ssp. altissima) are grown as ornamental plants and for their essential oils. The leaves of lemon balm, M. officinalis, are used to flavor tea; it is also used in herbal medicine as a mild sedative. M. officinalis was once considered a cure-all; its leaves were used in salads, soups and sauces; they were also stuffed into pillows as a sleep aid. The plant was dedicated to Melissa, a nymph who discovered and taught others how to extract honey from bees. Today it is still used as an herbal tea for its calming effect on the nerves and digestive system; it is also utilized topically for skin disorders such as cold sores and insect bites
